Crayons Sunday School Lesson – We Are God’s Creation

I have a couple of crayons in my hands. Can anyone tell me what we use crayons for?

That’s right! To create artwork.

Do you have a favorite color that you like to use when you’re coloring something?

There are so many different types of artwork that people create:

  • Drawings
  • Paintings
  • Sculptures
  • Photography
  • Graphic Design
  • Murals
  • Mosaics
  • and more!

There are people, who we call artists, who are famous for the art that they have made. Several well known artists are painters like Picasso, Van Gogh, and Bob Ross…sculptors like Michelangelo…and digital artists like Beeple (here’s a link to the most famous artists of all time). Who knows…maybe one of you will be a famous artist someday! We all see art differently. What one person thinks is beautiful, might not be interesting to someone else. That’s why there are so many different arts creating so many different types of unique artwork. Do you have a favorite artist who’s work you really like?

Guess what?

There’s one artist that is greater than all the others combined.

That’s God, the creator of all things.

He created green trees, the blue ocean, white snow, yellow bananas, red strawberries, and all the colors of the rainbow. And He even created us…people. We are his greatest artwork.

Ephesians 2:10 says “We are God’s creation. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. Now we can do good works. Long ago God prepared these works for us to do.”

Have you noticed that if you’re really up close to a drawing with your eyes it can be hard to see what it is. But, when you stand back or zoom out, you can see the entire picture. That’s kinda like our lives and our world. Sometimes we can’t see the beauty that God has created unless we step back and look at the bigger picture.

The God who made the giant mountains, the vast ocean, the unique animals all around us, the sun, the stars and the sky, is the same God who made us. That same God says you are His creation, His work of art and His masterpiece.

You are a work of art created by God! Isn’t that amazing? Sometimes we don’t feel beautiful. Sometimes we don’t think of ourselves as art. But, it’s true. We are God’s beautiful artwork. Every single person.

And, God created you to belong to Jesus, and He calls you to do good works.

This means that we know God’s plan for our life. We don’t have to guess what is it. It’s simple. He wants us to follow Jesus. And He wants us to do good works.

How can we follow Jesus and do good works?

  • We can read the Bible to follow Jesus’ teachings and we can do what He tells us to do.
  • We can pray and ask God to help us do good works in Jesus’ name.
  • We can obey our parents.
  • We can be kind to others.
  • We can think creatively about how we can help our friends and neighbors.

We don’t have to try to copy what the person next to us is doing, because God made all of us unique. We have each been given different gifts and abilities. God is weaving all of our lives together to make magnificent art in the world.

The next time you see a crayon, remember that you are one of God’s beautiful creations.
