Battery Sunday School Lesson – Following Jesus Recharges Us (Matthew 11:28-30)

Title: Fully Charged!

Big Idea: Following Jesus recharges us, refreshes us, and renews us.

Bible Reference: Come to me, all you who are tired and are carrying heavy loads. I will give you rest. Become my servants and learn from me. I am gentle and free of pride. You will find rest for your souls. Serving me is easy, and my load is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Object: Battery

Note: Introduce this lesson by using a household item that requires a battery to function. Take the battery out and demonstrate that it doesn’t work until you put the battery in. You can even discuss the science behind how batteries work. It’s really fascinating!

Battery Sunday School Lesson – Jesus Recharges Us

This object can be found in very different shapes and sizes. No matter how small though, it can make the difference between whether something works or not. Can anyone tell me what you call this?

That’s right…a battery.

Did you know about 3 BILLION batteries are sold in the US each year? That’s a lot of batteries!

What are some things that you have that require a battery to work?

  • remote controls
  • video game controllers
  • clocks
  • toys
  • watches
  • smoke detectors
  • flash lights

A battery is a device that stores energy and then lets out energy by converting it into electricity. That electricity is what is required to make all of these things work.

All batteries lose power over time and eventually need to be replaced or recharged.

Just like all these items that require batteries, people need energy, too. We need a lot of energy to go to school, play with friends, play sports, do our homework, and everything else that we do. But, as the day goes on we eventually become tired and need to eat to stay strong and eventually we all have to sleep so we can rest and regain our energy.

But, what can we do when our mind is tired? What happens when we worry too much? What happens when we feel exhausted by life? When our spirit feels overwhelmed?

Matthew 11:28-30 says “Come to me, all you who are tired and are carrying heavy loads. I will give you rest. Become my servants and learn from me. I am gentle and free of pride. You will find rest for your souls. Serving me is easy, and my load is light.”

The best rest for our mind and spirit comes from following Jesus. If life is overwhelming you, if there are difficult things happening in your life, Jesus says “come to Me” and I will help you carry it, come to Me and I will give you the rest that you need.

Jesus is our energy source. Jesus is the battery for our life. If we follow Jesus He will recharge, refresh, and renew us.

So how do we follow Jesus? We follow Jesus by believing in Him, putting our trust in Him, reading the Bible, praying, going to church, and being kind to others. We can ask ourselves “What would Jesus do?” when we encounter situations where we’re not sure what to do.

Let’s pray.

Dear God, thank you for sending us your son Jesus. We want to follow Him so that we can always be recharged. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
