Banana Sunday School Lesson – Fruit of the Spirit

One of God’s sweet creations that we get to enjoy is fruit. There are so many kinds, flavors, shapes, and colors, yet we can mostly look at a fruit and identify it. Like this one, who can tell me what this fruit is called?

Where would you expect to find a banana growing? Would you look for it among a tree of apples, a coconut tree, or a grapevine? Of course not, you’d expect to find a banana growing on a banana tree, right?

When God created the fruit trees in Genesis, He said that each tree was to bear fruit of its kind. That means when you plant an apple seed, you expect an apple to grow from it not a pumpkin. We know what kind of tree or plant it is by what is growing on it.

In Galatians, we’re taught about the fruit of the Spirit. This shows us what kind of fruit the Holy Spirit is known for. There’s a list starting in Galatians 5:22-23. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, and peace. It is being patient, kind, and good. It is being faithful and gentle and having control of oneself.

Just like we can identify that this is a banana because we see its long curved shape, we see it’s a light yellow color, we know what it tastes like and even if we had our eyes closed we’d probably be able to guess what it was.

The fruit of the Spirit works the same. We, you, and I are like trees. The kind of fruit that grows on us shows others what kind of trees we are. We can see that God is working in our hearts when the fruit of the Spirit is showing in our lives. When we extend love to one another when we are patient in frustrating situations when we are self-controlled.

These fruits don’t simply show in our lives out of nowhere. Like a tree, when we read God’s word, when we pray, when we come to lessons like this, God is planting a seed in our lives. As we continue to follow Him and rely on Him, He waters different places of our hearts and over time we begin to see the fruit, we begin to see how God has been growing us.

Do you see the fruit of the Spirit in your life? Do you see it in those around you? If not, God wants to grow you into a beautiful display of His work.

If you have seen the opposite fruit in your life, if there has been anger, impatience, if you’ve been out of control, and unkind, God wants to work on your heart. Pray and ask God for forgiveness, and then ask Him to help you grow the Fruit of the Spirit in your life.
